Romantic life and some other Hofstede concepts

In last week's class, two things were discussed, romantic life, and long term/short term orientation.
I do not have any experience in romantic life but based from what I've read, my country and Japan do have some similar views on a lot of things when it comes to romance, mainly, modesty, marriage consciousness, and meeting the parents.
In my culture PDA is basically just handholding and flirting but anything more than that is seen as immodest and something you should do in private, people are also more so looking for life partners rather than just casual dating, and of course meeting the parents is very important, your marriage is not valid if you do not tell your partner's parents that you want to marry your partner, even if their parents disapprove, you still need to meet them and talk to their face with balls of steel that you want to marry their daughter.
On the other hand we differ in some aspects, men are expected to cover the bill instead of splitting it 50/50 for example, I think we also tend to be more direct in our confessions compared to the Japanese.

Next, another Hofstede concept was discussed, which was short term and long term orientation, it is stated that long term orientated countries look more towards the future, invest more in education and R&D, easily accept other cultures, and the countries he decided to choose for this included Japan, and this is why I don't like a lot of Hofstede's models, Japan is very clearly not long term orientated when you look at all its policies for example, in the last 2 decades they massively cut R&D funding, education isn't as emphasized either and very recently they decided to cut away scholarships for foreign PHD students, completely opposite of what Hofstede is trying to imply.

On the other hand short term oriented people prefer stability over change and he used western cultures as an example, and while conservatism is very popular in western culture so is the opposite, progressivism, which once again shows that Hofstede's concepts do not actually apply at all in practice because most nations aren't as black and white as Hofstede's concepts make them out to be.
