Cultural Self Awareness
Cultural Self Awareness is a topic I have taken in today's class of Intercultural Communication and Understanding where we talked about comparing and contrasting cultural differences between Japan and our own cultures. I think it was a very interesting thing to talk about as I plan to live in Japan in the future, knowing these differences is vital for a harmonious future. Among the things we discussed are:
Using humor and not using humor
How you talk to the elderly and people younger than your age
What to talk about when introducing yourself
If it is fine to point out someone's appearance features whether negative or positive
The use of interjections(Yes yes yes(hai hai hai), I agree, you're so right, sou desu ne, and so on)
I discussed these things with 3 different people today, one from Indonesia, one from China, one American-Japanese student.
And I got varying answers, which showcases the differences culturally amongst the world, what might be fine or normal in one culture could be not okay or widespread in another culture, all in all, I learned so many things today.
I also love interacting with other students and seeing the cultural differences and similarities!
